Iontophoresis for Hand and Feet Sweating
Iontophoresis is a technique using a small electric charge to deliver water or a chemical through the skin. This process is a non-invasive method. This can block the flow of sweat through the skin’s surface. The drying effects however can become shorter with long term use.
Iontophoresis treatment can be used for excessive sweating of the hands and feet. The effects are short lived and needs to be used regularly as the sweating returns. Iontophoresis is not as effective for underarm sweating. It is useful for people who have tried prescribed antiperspirants, but find that they need a stronger treatment. For people with excessive sweating of the hands or feet, iontophoresis treatments can result in up to an 80% reduction in sweating. Many patients however find this treatment quite time consuming (40-60 minutes) and very laborious as the sweat free period can become shorter (days compared to week initially). This treatment is effective for a well motivated person who is having good results.
Women who are pregnant, people with pacemakers, or metal implants in the current path (such as joint replacements), cardiac conditions, electrical sensitivity, or epilepsy should not use iontophoresis.
