Drug Therapy for Underarm Sweating
Drug Therapy of the underarm is very effective in stopping severe sweat production (81% of the patients receiving neurotransmitter blocker injections achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating). Drug Therapy however does not provide a permanent treatment solution for underarm sweating. Drug Therapy is a chemical that paralyses nerve endings in the sweat gland. Whilst it is very good in that gives a near instant result, the nerve endings always recover and therefore the effects of a single treatment lasts anywhere between 3-12 months. Depending on the patient, Drug Therapy may therefore need repeating.
The advantage of Drug Therapy treatment is that it can be performed in an outpatient set up under local anaesthesia and thus can be performed as a “walk in walk out” environment.
Drug Therapy can also be effectively used for back and chest sweating. Its limitations in other areas are that it can be more painful to give when compared to the underarm. For this reason patients may therefore find the treatment unacceptable for treating sweating outside the underarm.
